Firm History
Dumas
& Moriarty, LLP, is the oldest law firm in Rensselaer,
Indiana. In 1946, Thomas B. Dumas opened his first law office as a
sole practitioner. Tom Dumas graduated from Indiana University
School of Law, and practiced law as a sole practitioner until
1964. In 1964, William J. Moriarty, Jr. joined the practice as an
associate.
William J.
Moriarty, Jr. obtained his undergraduate degree from St Joseph's College
in Rensselaer, Indiana in 1961. He then attended and graduated
from Northwestern University School of Law in 1964. In 1974,
William J. Moriarty, Jr. became a partner with Thomas Dumas and the
partnership was then named Dumas & Moriarty.
In 1976,
Edward P. Dumas, the son of Thomas Dumas, joined the firm as an
associate. Ed Dumas joined the firm as a partner in 1982.
The partnership then became known as Dumas, Moriarty, & Dumas.
In 1990, Tom Dumas retired from the active practice of law and became of
counsel. The name of the firm was then changed to Dumas &
Moriarty.
In July of
1993, William J. Moriarty, Jr. died. In August, 1993, soon after
Mr. Moriarty's death, Kent E. Mahnesmith joined the firm as an
associate. Kent Mahnesmith became a partner in the firm in
2000. In 1998, Tom Dumas died. The law firm changed its name
to Dumas & Moriarty, LLP in 2001. Ed Dumas and Kent Mahnesmith
continue to serve as active attorneys with the firm of Dumas &
Moriarty, LLP.

Moriarty, LLP is located on the Courthouse square in Rensselaer, the
county seat of Jasper County, Indiana.
